Volunteer Tax Preparers needed for the VITA/EITC Program
Advocacy for the Poor is a member of the Forsyth Working Families Partnership, a collaborative of organizations working to raise awareness about the Earned Income Tax Credit and recruit volunteers to become certified tax preparers.
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is often called the largest anti-poverty program in the nation, because a working low-to-moderate income family that qualifies for EITC can receive a tax refund of up to $5,028 in a given year?a significant amount of additional income if you live at or below poverty level.
However, millions of dollars of this tax credit typically go unclaimed every year. Estimates range from $8 to 12 million unclaimed locally each year.
Forsyth Working Families Partnership offers free income tax preparation for families making up to $49,000 a year (or individuals up to $24,000) at a variety of sites from mid-January to mid-April. IRS-certified volunteers file federal and state returns electronically at no charge to the taxpayer.
