Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to “eradicating hunger and undernutrition in the United States.” FRAC attempts to eradicate hunger by researching hunger, its effects, and possible solutions; promoting those solutions through policy advocacy; monitoring implementation of laws that affect hunger; and educating the public on the issue. Bread for the World (BFTW) is a Christian organization that advocates for policies and programs that will end hunger around the globe. In the US, Bread for the World Institute, BFTW’s research wing, researches hunger and educates state and local advocates on the issue as well as pursues national policy change. United States Department of Agriculture is the federal agency that oversees the country’s nutrition assistance programs. The current Secretary of Agriculture is Tom Vilsack. USDA.gov provides: statistics on who is participating in nutrition assistance programs; nutritional education materials for teachers; research opportunities for nutrition and agricultural scientists; eligibility requirements for federal programs; and more.

North Carolina Division of Health and Human Services (DHHS) the agency in the State of North Carolina that handles both the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the Women, Infants, and Children program. DHHS provides program eligibility information, statistics on the use of public programs in NC, nutritional education information for home, business, or school use. Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina’s mission is to “reduce hunger and malnutrition in North Carolina.” The organization pursues that goal by acquiring and distributing food to the hungry (through food banks, backpacks programs, and afterschool programs), educating Forsyth County residents about hunger, and connecting with other service providers to improve the quality of all services to Forsyth County’s needy populations. Crisis Control Ministry (CCM) “A Christian-based ministry whose mission is to assist people in crisis to meet essential life needs.” CCM runs food pantries for clients who can provide documentation that their income and expenses leave them with few options for feeding their families. CCM also provides emergency assistance payments for utilities and free prescription drugs. Learn more about their services at http://www.crisiscontrol.org.
Forsyth County Department of Social Services: the agency responsible for running the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance and Women, Infants, and Children programs in Forsyth County. Applicants for the programs can apply in person at 741 Highland Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 (office line is 336-703-3803) or download copies of the application online and mail them.
