The current economic crisis has contributed to a growing number of homeless in the nation.

The Problem

National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH) a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that advocates on behalf of the homeless, and researches and promotes ideas for preventing and ending homelessness. The NAEH conducts studies of homelessness in the US through its research arm, the Homeless Research Institute. The NAEH also produced the 2009 Homelessness Policy Guide which explains all of the federal legislation surrounding homeless. Find out more at http://endhomelessness.org.

National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) a national network of “people who are currently experiencing or have experienced homelessness, activists and advocates, community-based and faith-based service providers, and others committed to a single mission.” NCH focuses its efforts on four areas: housing justice, economic justice, health care justice, and civil rights. The Consequences

North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness (NCCEH) “is a statewide membership nonprofit created to secure resources, encourage public dialogue, and advocate for public policy change to end homelessness.” NCCEH provides gathers information on homelessness across North Carolina and analyzes it for agencies around NC to put to use in their fights for the homeless. Taking Action

United Way of Forsyth County and the 10-Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness (UW and TYP) Basic & Emergency Needs/Homelessness is one of UW’s focus areas so when Winston-Salem designed and began implementation of a city-wide TYP, UW naturally took the lead. Housing Authority of Winston-Salem (HAWS) executes the federal Public and Housing Choice Voucher Programs. HAWS also helps prepare current renters for homeownership. Find out more about HAWS programs and eligibility requirements at http://www.haws.org.
