Advocacy for the Poor

Advocacy for the Poor, Inc. is 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization that exists to focus attention on issues relating to economic independence for the poor of Forsyth County, NC by representing their interests and working for systemic change.

Advocacy for the Poor advocates by:

Educating the community about the plight of the financially poor
Raising the awareness of decision-makers about issues of poverty
Working with community organizations to move beyond charity to break the cycle of poverty

We understand that local service providers and government agencies work diligently to meet the survival needs of the poor and homeless, but meeting their needs—especially in times of crisis—can be all-consuming. Few organizations have the capacity to look beyond their clients’ day-to-day crises to the systemic causes of their poverty and homelessness.

Recognizing that local service providers can alleviate, but never solve, their clients’ problems if they can’t treat their root causes, community members founded Advocacy for the Poor to do just that.

Advocacy for the Poor began operations in 1998 intent on "speaking out on behalf of the financially poor of Forsyth County."
